2) Food to be avoided
3) Question-Answer

[Editor’s word]

What we present below is a scientific layout of food-groups and specific items from our regular eats that are healthy from the point of view of the ensuing winter season. By re-arranging our routine food habits we can boost our innate healing power for a winter of health and well being.
The presentation is general. Specific requirements may be different from person to person. We would like to have your queries so that we may reply food specific to your requirement (please do not forward medical queries which is not the scope or intention of this newsletter)

Healthy Food for the Winter

Different food has been placed with respect to our meals taken over a span of one day (wake up till snooze)

- our bulk of nutrition during the winter should be form solid vegetables (namely vegetables like cauliflower & lady finger/bhendi)

- some fats, the best option being ghee taken 2-3 teaspoons (surprise!! for weight watchers!!)

- stimulating products like garlic, ginger, peppermint, black salt, mint are a must in the winters. They must find place in our daily fare in some form or the other.

- Most of the fluid consumed has to be in soup form (taken hot/ warm).

- The best bet for proteins are mineral based ones (abundant as vegetable proteins rather than animal which will require a mineral supplement). A few takes are green peas, all pulses and sprouts.

- What is interesting to note is that carbohydrates- our regular wheat, bajri, brown rice/rice has to be about ¼ of our consumption while winter is on.

- Winter fruits- awla, orange along lemon occupy special place!

Food to be avoided

Well the list is not very exhaustive:
1) Milk and butter milk
2) All juicy vegetables (namely bottle gourd/doodhi, cucumber)
3) Sour like imli, amsul
4) All fermented food

Tips for sound winter health

- sound sleep, not less than 7-8 hours (are we surprised!!)

With Dada Dr. Jaynarayan having decided to return to his contemplation back in his Ashram at Pargaon, near Pune the onus of the mentor behind our newsletter shifts to Dr. Govind.
I look forward to have another innings with sir & hope that someday, God willing, shall have the privilege of having Dada at our editor’s table. I also wish to present an in-tune, but slightly different approach to our newsletter topic.

Nutrition in Nature Cure:
The physiological role of nutrition in the human body
.
Layout
1) What is Nature Cure?
2) Internal and External Nature Cure.
3) Nutrition
4) Medicine
5) Internal environment of the human body-Homeostasis

[Editor’s word]
Is it possible to replace medicine with nutrition? The answer is ‘no’ without argument. But nutrition can be applied as a replacement for medicine in routine use which will reduce daily dependence upon medicine and its side effects. The watch word is while medicine supports health. Nutrition promotes it.

1) What is Nature Cure?
Answer: Nature is abundant in its flora and fauna. Each nature product has its unique ability to heal and promote well being. But than it may not be safe to consume or apply all natural sources without being informed about it. Nature Cure is the collection of the known natural elements which have been proven in use either by science (nutrition) or by tradition (massage).
Naturopathy is the academic study of this art of natural healing.

2) Internal and External Nature Cure.
Elements available in nature that can be consumed come under Internal Nature Cure. Examples are nutrition and fasting. There are other elements like body and energy work. The use of massage, steam bath, packs and the like which are applied from the outside. It is external Nature Cure.

3) Nutrition
We eat different kind of food everyday. Most often it is by habit, tradition and taste. Placing the different kinds of food in a scientific configuration, arranging them as per the requirement of the human body, which is again different for all of us, mode of consumption (cooked, raw, otherwise) and the exact calculation of the returns expected and elimination of the byproducts is called nutrition.
Nutrition in brief is the end product of the physiological process of digestion. The other part of the end product is the body’s natural waste (faces, urine, and sweat)

4) Medicine
Nature in packs of pills and capsules is medicine. The origin of both nutrition and medicine is the same. One found its way to our dining table and became common place. The other made its way through scientific research and labs to the chemist’s.
It is very interesting to note that the first year student of pharmacology begins his study of medicine from the natural products available in bounty in nature and closing it, at the end of the syllabus in the shelf of the chemist.
Medicine is the wonder of modern science, a boon to man kind. So what went wrong with medicines? Nothing!!! Rather we went incorrect in our habits! If packaging nature into life saving drug is the boon of mankind’s evolution in science than going away from nature is the bane. We simply lost our touch with nature and turned to medicine which was meant for emergency and life saving purposes!

5) Internal environment of the human body-Homeostasis
The perfect condition of health and well being is called as homeostasis in the medical language of physiology. It is a state where the entire human body works in tandem maintaining health and happiness.
Any disturbance in this environment of the human body causes uneasiness in health which is called disease. Medicine tries to restore homeostasis and gets back one to health.
A Nature Cure person tries to balance the said homeostasis through the use of nutrition. We can take simple example of acidity, a common condition of abdominal malady, common cold, another commonplace nuisance. A person suffering from chronic Arthritis. The Naturopath uses his knowledge of sound nutrition to place and rearrange the eating habits and substances of food and drink to restore the displaced homeostasis with respect to the disease in hand. Example rice and dal the most commonly consumed food items in our country are placed in separately. Rice taken with vegetables one time and dal/protein product had with vegetables at another time. It is a sure shot balanced meal for curing acidity. Cucumber taken in solid or as fluid is natural antacid.
As such your nearest Naturopath may have the answer to most of your maladies that has been interfering your daily happiness and health!
Given a choice medicine or food I believe the wise will like to pick up the latter for it is the substance of life. Medicine is necessary but only when it is necessary.
